Indian scientists map migratory bird routes using satellite tags

A joint research project between BNHS and ISRO has implanted GPS satellite tags on migratory birds in Punjab to study their flight paths to Siberia, Central Asia, and East Africa. Data over six months shows routes taking up to 18,000 km round-trip, with stopovers in wetlands facing climate stress. The maps will help strengthen conservation and habitat protection along flyways. The project, backed by Darwin Initiative, is considered a landmark in avian ecology research.
