India to launch solar powered light vessels on Brahmaputra

The Inland Waterways Authority of India has unveiled plans to deploy solar-powered barges on the Brahmaputra River to serve as floating classrooms, medical units and tourist shuttles. Each vessel has an array of solar panels powering lighting, navigation, water purification and Wi‑Fi. The initiative supports river tourism, healthcare delivery to riverbank communities, and sustainable inland transport. Polymer hull technology ensures durability in changing river conditions. Launch is expected in early 2026.
